  Many people know the western honeybee (Apis mellifera) only as a honey provider, but it is much more than that. Originally native to our forests, it has adapted to natural environmental conditions over 10,000 years. Today it is highly endangered in the wild in Switzerland. The loss of old trees with natural cavities, diseases such as the Varroa mite and intensive beekeeping are among the factors that severely affect them. In order for honeybees to form stable populations again, they must be able to adapt naturally to environmental changes and require suitable habitats. They depend on our support. We must give them back the place in nature that is rightfully theirs. But their protection is currently still being subordinated to economic interests and ideologies. FreeTheBees is committed to preserving the honeybee in the wild and therefore promotes its original habitat: the tree cavity. We are investigating whether honeybee colonies can survive for multiple years in the wild, what factors influence their increased mortality and what is needed for them to form stable populations again. This is not only about protecting honeybees themselves, but also about preserving natural biodiversity. Because tree cavities are not only a habitat for honeybees – many other animal species such as countless insects, birds and bats also depend on them. To achieve these goals, we work with two key projects: Swiss BeeMapping and the project ”Tree cavities – biodiversity for the forest”. For this, we rely on the support of volunteers.

• Doctor-patient-communication app to overcome language barriers

  PICTOMED’s key project is a web-based, non-verbal, visual communication tool to overcome language barriers in doctor-patient-communication. We enable healthcare providers and patients who do not share a common language to communicate with ease, simply by pointing to pictures. We provide over 300 illustrations of medical symptoms. We are looking for volunteers who can help us design medical illustrations. Well-designed illustrations enable healthcare providers and patients to overcome language barriers. Thereby, providing health equity which allows for social and economical integration of migrants and refugees.

• Join the Magic of Circo Fortuna!

  For almost 30 years, Circo Fortuna has been much more than an association: we are a driver of social change, an educational reference point, and a place where children, young people, and families discover the transformative power of circus arts. Every summer, over 300 participants have unique experiences that culminate in the creation of final shows, where the values of collaboration and creativity, lived during the camp days, are expressed. The project aims to ensure access for families in difficulty, children in foster care, and young people with social challenges or mild disabilities. We are therefore looking for volunteers who can provide concrete help in setting up the summer camp, offering in return the opportunity to attend an evening show.

  Babsy has been around since 2018, and since 2022 we have been operating an app in the greater Basel area that helps parents and caregivers find each other based solely on donations. We have built the safest contact platform currently available in Switzerland. Searching, booking, finding, chatting, and video calling are already possible, but our users' wish list is extensive, which is why we would like to tackle the next development steps together with you. Topics such as the mutual rating system, extensions to include day care providers, etc., are important to provide relief for parents and at the same time offer great job opportunities for sitters. The association is officially non-profit and is very committed to issues related to integration, equality, and social justice. The assistance can be very individually tailored, work can be done on-site and remotely, and you can use your strengths in a targeted manner.

  The Beverin Nature Park, together with local communities, is committed to preserving historical buildings. This includes the "alt Landbrugg" near Hinterrhein in the municipality of Rheinwald. The bridge was built in 1693, and in 2023, on the 200th anniversary of the Commercial Road, the paving was renovated. This year, in collaboration with the municipality of Rheinwald and volunteers, the plaster of the bridge will be renewed. By participating, you not only contribute to the preservation of the landscape and historical buildings but also get to know a beautiful and historically rich region.

• Dry-stone walls in Beverin Nature Park - Alp Durnan

  Beverin Nature Park works together with farmers to preserve dry-stone walls. In Andeer on Alp Durnan, a historic dry-stone wall is to be renovated and preserved. The wall is located on a flat moor and borders the Lai Lung mountain lake, in the midst of a beautiful mountain landscape. The motto of the assignment is “learning by doing.” Learn the ancient craft of drywall construction under expert guidance and test what you have learned directly on a historic dry-stone wall. By taking part, you make a valuable contribution to the preservation of the landscape, cultural objects and the promotion of biodiversity.

  The aim of the “bergversetzer” (“mountain volunteers”) organization is to support people in the mountain regions in Switzerland by arranging for individual volunteers to help them with projects. This includes tasks such as maintaining pastures and forests, ensuring the upkeep of paths as well as more complex tasks such as building dry stone walls or constructing sheds and stables.

  Neophytes are plant species that were only introduced to a region after the discovery of America in 1492. Some of these are invasive species that can spread rapidly, displace native vegetation and endanger our health. Combatting invasive neophytes in protected landscapes is crucial for the preservation of biodiversity and the ecological balance. In Parc Ela, the largest nature park in Switzerland, the spread of invasive species is limited to the valley floor, where further spread has been prevented thanks to rigorous control in recent years. Together, we will support local stakeholders and help combat invasive species along the two rivers Landwasser and Albula very close to the Landwasser Viaduct.

• Nature conservation in Neeracherried

  The Neeracherried is a natural habitat for countless animals and plants – it contains populations of national importance and has more than 450 documented plant species. But these native populations are being increasingly threatened by invasive plants that have been introduced to the region. Unless we take measures to protect them, newcomers like golden rod could completely overwhelm weaker native species like orchids. It is not enough to regularly mow the reed meadows. The only way to preserve biodiversity effectively is by pulling out invasive plants by their roots.
