Introduction to permaculture
A week of pure sustainability! Ten young volunteers from Switzerland aged 16 to 29 will work to help protect the environment. Together with young people from Spain, they will volunteer on a permaculture finca (farm) and experience a week of various outdoor activities, permaculture workshops and art projects. This international youth exchange will allow participants to immerse themselves in the world of permaculture and promote intercultural exchange.

The project, organized by the Swiss association MUNTERwegs, builds a bridge between social cohesion, education and the environment.

The volunteers will be supported by a team of youth workers.

Duration:

  • Preparatory meeting at the start of March 2024 for approx. 2.5 hours in Zug canton.
  • Sunday, 19 May 2024 to Saturday, 25 May 2024.

Location:

Finca “Son Barrina” in Mallorca.

How it will work:

  • Sunday, 19 May: arrival
  • Monday, 20 May  Welcome and introduction to the garden and the team, basic course permaculture I Introduction to the Spanish volunteers aged between 14 and 29, preparation of individual workshops on permaculture.
  • Tuesday, 21 May: Basic course permaculture II, holding of the workshops (designed by the young volunteers from Spain and Switzerland), games evening.
  • Wednesday, 22 May: Art workshop (upcycling material) and permaculture workshop in small groups.
  • Thursday 23 May: joint beach clean-up (active environmental protection), excursion to other permaculture fincas in the region.
  • Friday, 24 May: Basic course permaculture III, evaluation, final evening together.
  • Saturday, 25 May 2024: Travel home.

Introduction:

Preparatory tasks for the young people:

  • In small groups, the participants will research various aspects of permaculture in advance and prepare short presentations/workshops for the week. They will be accompanied by three volunteers who, at the time of the youth exchange, have already spent eight months working in permaculture at the finca ”Son Barrina.” Via Zoom, the participants are not only introduced to the concept of permaculture, they also decide in which aspect of permaculture they would like to get particularly involved during the week and form small groups of three to five accordingly. These groups will be international.

Support:

  • 1 youth worker, project manager Miriam Hess and Peter Hess (driver, cook).
  • Preparatory meeting at the beginning of March 2024 with introduction / coaching, planning of individual workshops on permaculture (alone or in small groups according to personal interests). The participants receive coaching from the permaculture experts as required. 
  • Design of the menu for the week together with a chef. 

Tasks:

  • Preparation and design of a workshop (alone or in small groups) on the topic of permaculture according to personal interests/resources (everyone is accompanied or receives coaching for this).
  • Active participation in the workshops on the permaculture finca, involvement in the beach clean-up campaign, upcycling art workshop and permaculture basic course, interest in intercultural cooperation with young people and a team of experts. 
  • Design of the menu for the meeting (sustainable, vegetarian, seasonal).

What you’ll need:

  • Minimum A2 level English,
    working language German, French, Italian, English or Spanish
  • You are healthy, physically and mentally fit.
  • An interest in environmental protection and permaculture.

Requirements:

  • Completed written application.
  • Your own liability and health insurance.
  • Attendance at the preparatory meeting and the full one-week program at finca “Son Barrina.”
  • Participation fee CHF 350.
