Mission on Alp Nursera for Moor and Goat! The two-day mission takes place in the Göriwald-Andeer special forest reserve. Due to a bog restoration, some alpine pastures have become waterlogged and are no longer usable for agriculture. Therefore, volunteers are clearing other areas to create replacement grazing land for the goats. Additionally, the mission takes place in the Andeer-Göriwald special forest reserve, which has been designated for grouse. Thus, the volunteers are not only helping with the revitalization of a high moor and supporting mountain agriculture, but they are also creating clearings and promoting the habitat of capercaillie and black grouse. The work is carried out in a beautiful mountain landscape with a high moor of national importance, plenty of fresh air, and hopefully lots of sunshine.

save food - do good - cook togheter The Foodsave Meeting is a meeting point by SocialCuisine that utilizes surplus food from the foodsavemarket. At the market, fruits and vegetables that would otherwise be discarded by wholesalers are offered. The goal is to minimize food waste while simultaneously supporting socially disadvantaged people. In a half-day team effort, we prepare at least 100 meals from surplus vegetables and fruits for people on the street. The meals are distributed by the Incontro association's food distribution service.

In the Zurich area, Andreas Benz from Fahr-Erlebnis is working on converting his apple orchard from conventional to organic farming. Here we are implementing targeted measures to strengthen both the flora and fauna of the orchard and increase biodiversity. An exciting and complex project! A wild hedge is being planted on the northern edge of the plantation, which provides food for pollinators such as wild bees as well as promoting habitat connectivity for small mammals such as weasels. We are also building two weasel castles made of stone and wood, which provide valuable habitats for these small predators. A natural fence planted with hops and ivy, as well as piles of branches and stones, create further habitats and promote connectivity for small mammals.

Above Biasca lies the chestnut grove of Santa Petronilla, a historically and ecologically valuable habitat where people have cultivated sweet chestnuts (castanea sativa) for centuries. The open, light-flooded forest structures of these groves were created through regular cultivation and were once central supply areas for humans and animals. Today, this unique cultural landscape is at risk of disappearing: Without maintenance, brambles, bracken and other highly competitive shrubs grow back, thickening the undergrowth and preventing the regeneration of the chestnut trees. This destroys valuable habitats for heat-loving species such as lizards, wild bees, bats and various types of fungi. The work includes cutting back undergrowth, removing invasive species, clearing old chestnut trees and clearing branches. The work will help restore the sparse forest structure typical for chestnuts – and with it a piece of living Ticino history.

The area lies on Mont Racine in the Jura mountain range. It is a popular hiking area along the Jura Crest Trail and offers impressive high pastures with distinctive spruces and steep forested slopes. The Swiss Army owns the property and operates a shooting range there. The site contains several kilometers of former dry stone walls, some of which have crumbled. The primary goal of this project is to restore the historic dry stone walls in Les Pradières. These walls represent important elements of our cultural landscape and play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity. They provide habitat for numerous species, including amphibians and reptiles, and contribute to the ecological stability of the region. The highest priority is given to walls that are not in the immediate vicinity of the shooting ranges and whose conservation has the greatest impact on biodiversity, species diversity and the traditional landscape.

The rare Black Hairstreak and the Lesser Purple Emperor butterflies can be found near Zurich Airport. During this assignment, you will work in a newly reforested area, where measures have already been implemented to promote the two butterflies. The females of these butterflies lay their eggs individually on Prunus and Populus species. These plants were replanted last spring, but as part of this operation they must be freed from overgrown plants such as blackberries. Under the guidance of our experienced guides, you will carry out this meaningful and satisfying activity. The maintenance and improvement of habitats often requires labor-intensive measures that would not be manageable without the helping hands of volunteers. With its 105 hectares, the Neeracherried is one of the last large lowland moors in Switzerland and is a nationally significant protected area. It provides valuable habitat for countless birds, plants, amphibians, reptiles, and small animals—and also serves as a resting place for migratory birds, a winter refuge, and a breeding ground for rare species. More than 450 plant species have been recorded here. However, these populations are threatened by problematic and invasive non-native plants. Without protective measures, these so-called neophytes, such as goldenrod, can completely wipe out less competitive species (e.g., orchids). Regular mowing of the meadows is not enough. Only pulling out these plants along with their roots is effective enough and makes a valuable contribution to preserving biodiversity. For this, we rely on active team-support.
