Volunteering in the Weerd‑Fischergrien at BirdLife Klingnauer Stausee

The Weerd‑Fischergrien is a valuable floodplain area of national importance. Its open landscapes, with numerous ponds and water bodies, provide important habitats for many rare animal and plant species. Amphibians in particular, such as the yellow‑bellied toad, benefit from the well‑sunlit, sparsely vegetated pools found in this dynamic floodplain environment. At the same time, woody vegetation and so‑called neophytes—introduced plant species such as annual fleabane—are spreading in parts of the area and can displace native species that are less competitive.
As part of this nature conservation volunteering activity, participants make a tangible contribution to preserving this valuable habitat. Under the expert guidance of experienced leaders from the BirdLife Nature Centre Klingnauer Stausee, volunteers learn how targeted management measures help maintain open areas and ensure sufficient sunlight for the ponds. This includes removing young woody shoots, particularly willows and poplars, as well as controlling invasive neophytes before they set seed.
The activity combines meaningful engagement with hands‑on learning in nature. Participants gain insights into the ecological importance of floodplain landscapes, learn more about biodiversity, and become familiar with practical management measures that are essential for conserving threatened habitats. At the same time, the experience encourages a more conscious appreciation of the natural environment around the Nature Center Klingnauer Stausee—an added value that extends well beyond the day of volunteering.
Following the practical work, participants are invited to join an engaging guided tour of the BirdLife Nature Centre Klingnauer Stausee, including nature observation.

How it will work:
- 08:30 a.m. Arrival, welcome and introduction
- 08:45 a.m. Field work: removing invasive plant species (neophytes) and problem plants
- 12:45 p.m. Group walk to the BirdLife Nature Centre
- 01:00 p.m. Lunch break (bring your own picnic)
- 01:30 p.m. Coffee and cake (provided by the Nature Centre)
- 02:00 p.m. Guided tour of the Nature Centre incl. nature observation
- 02:45 p.m. End of the assignment
Note: Changing facilities are available at the Nature Centre before departure.
Introduction:
At the beginning, an experienced leader from BirdLife will explain the tasks on site.
Support:
Guidance and support will be provided by the BirdLife Nature Center at Klingnauer Stausee throughout the entire work assignment.
Tasks:
- Removing invasive plant species (neophytes)
- Mowing problematic plant growth
- Actively contributing to the protection of rare plant and animal species
What you’ll need:
- Motivation for light physical work outdoors
- Approx. 4 hours of active participation
- Enjoyment of working outside in nature
Note:
- Weather‑appropriate outdoor clothing
- Long‑sleeved clothing (protection against scratches)
- Rubber boots or hiking / trekking shoes
- Personal food and drinks
- Sun and/or rain protection (including headwear)
- Gardening or work gloves (if available)
- Recommended: spare clothes and shoes for the journey home
Important:
- Participants with known allergies to pollen or plant contact are advised to bring appropriate anti‑allergy medication if needed.
