The purpose of this project is to promote social integration and mutual understanding between corporate employees and refugees by using sport, specifically cricket, as a shared platform for interaction and cultural exchange. For many refugees, particularly those from cricket-playing countries, cricket is more than a sport; it is an important part of their cultural identity. A fun, hands-on introduction to cricket allows volunteers to experience this passion directly, making it an accessible and enjoyable way to understand culture and begin meaningful intercultural exchange.
The project benefits refugees by building social connections, confidence, visibility, and access to informal mentoring and role models. Volunteers benefit through meaningful intercultural engagement, team-building, and active social responsibility. In a structured one-day programme, refugees and volunteers train and play cricket together in mixed teams, breaking down barriers through shared experience. This is followed by shared meals and small-group exchanges, where volunteers share educational and professional journeys.
Duration:
- Approximately 5–6 hours in total
Location:
Embrach Cricket Ground, Römerweg 5/21, 8424 Embrach
How it will work:
The assignment consists of a one-day, in-person programme designed to bring together employees and refugees through sport and dialogue. Participants take part in a guided introduction to cricket, including basic training and a friendly match played in mixed teams of refugees and volunteers. This is followed by shared meals and facilitated small-group exchanges focused on education, career paths, and life experiences. The assignment concludes with a cultural showcase presented by refugee participants. The programme is fully facilitated and does not require prior cricket experience from volunteers.
- Morning: Introductory cricket session and mixed-team match
- Midday: Shared lunch
- Afternoon: Tandem exchange discussions and cultural showcase.
Introduction:
Volunteers are introduced to their role through a short briefing prior to the event. In advance, they receive written information outlining the programme objectives, the schedule of the day, and basic cultural context. No prior cricket experience is required. At the start of the assignment, volunteers participate in a guided introduction to cricket led by qualified coaches, who explain the rules, roles, and values of the game in a simple and engaging way. Facilitators are present throughout the day to support interaction, encourage inclusive participation, and guide volunteers during the exchange sessions with refugees.
Support:
Volunteers are guided by experienced facilitators and cricket coaches throughout the day. Facilitators ensure tasks are clear, maintain a respectful environment, assist with communication, and provide ongoing guidance to encourage active, culturally sensitive engagement.
Tasks:
- Participate in the cricket session alongside refugees, helping learn and practice the game.
- Play in mixed-team matches to foster interaction and break social barriers.
- Take part in tandem exchange discussions, sharing personal and professional experiences with refugees.

What you'll need:
- Interest in sport and intercultural engagement.
- Willingness to participate actively in cricket, regardless of prior experience.
- Openness to interact respectfully with refugees from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to commit to the full-day programme, including cricket, discussions, and cultural activities.
- Positive attitude, teamwork, and adaptability.
- No prior cricket expertise is required; the focus is on enthusiasm, communication, and cultural curiosity.
Note:
- Volunteers must be in good health and able to participate in light physical activity (cricket).
- Appropriate sportswear and footwear should be worn; all necessary equipment (bats, balls, protective gear) will be provided.
- Volunteers must follow safety instructions and respect all participants.
- Volunteers should inform the organizers in advance of any dietary restrictions, allergies, or medical conditions that may require special attention during the programme.
Exact dates and timings will be confirmed in coordination with corporate partners and refugee participants.
